Environmental Conference 2022

In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of climate change and environmental sustainability. To act on climate change and explore environmental concerns, we decided to organize an environmental conference to raise awareness and discuss potential solutions to related issues.

The conference is envisaged as a one-day event and will be held in partnership with six other university societies from the United Kingdom and Singapore. Our guest speakers come from an array of backgrounds, such as business, law and education.

The growing impact of ESG factors on businesses

The aim of this panel discussion is to familiarise attendees with the concept of ESG, enable attendees to gain insight into the growing impact of ESG factors on businesses, as well as explore challenges faced by businesses and how current policies will evolve in the future. To achieve this, an array of guest speakers from different backgrounds such as law and education will be invited to participate. This is hence a prime opportunity to both learn about the environment and establish connections with like-minded individuals and professionals.

Rebellion and why it is necessary

Climate research is clear; climate collapse is near. Governments’ plans though are not cut out to reverse planetary harm, or even prevent best-case scenarios. The lobbying techniques of green movements of the past have failed widely. In recent years though, environmental groups have shifted tactics to centre themselves around the idea of rebellion. In this panel, we will focus on voices from within these movements to try to understand the gravity of the situation faced and why rebellion truly is necessary.

NUS

Climate change in an island state context

This panel discussion aims to explore how the various mitigation measures in addressing climate change have been adapted to match the specific needs of and threats to Singapore as an island-state. Our speakers will share on how these approaches can be adapted to other locales, and explore existing gaps which can be improved on.

Cambridge

Environmental Consulting: A dive into COP26 and low-carbon lifestyles

Representatives from industry, top consulting firms and former alumni/current Cambridge students with first-hand experience will give a panel-type discussion on environmental consulting, and what the field entails. The session is provisionally planned to be led by our Careers and Speakers Officer with time for Q&A in the last 15 minutes of the event. Speakers may wish to draw upon their own experiences and career paths to date.

Exeter

Intersectional Environmentalism

Many people in the environmental movement fail to acknowledge the importance of an intersectional approach. Too often are indigenous voices minimised or removed from important climate conversations, despite their plethora of traditional knowledge, as well as their increased vulnerability to the changing climate. In this session, we will be giving a ‘beginners guide to intersectional environmentalism’ where we will explore what it is and its importance in society, and the environmental movement. We will spend some time in the second half focusing on contextualising this into real-world scenarios.

Too Good To Go

Each year, more than one-third of food produced in the world goes to waste, and it is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. TooGoodToGo, an organisation that is fighting against the food waste crisis by giving the power back to the consumer, is on a mission to change this. During the event, TooGoodToGo will talk about how to make a real impact on the issue of food waste by working with public affairs, education, and hand in hand with households and businesses. The presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A to contextualise how you can make fighting food waste a part of your daily life.
